Modern electric drives bring new challenges for bearings. Unwanted electrical currents can pass through the bearing, causing raceway damage, vibration, premature wear and reduced service life. This is why ZKL has developed
VOLPROTEQ
More than insulation. Controlled protection.
Electrically insulated rolling bearings are designed to prevent the passage of electric current through the bearing by means of a dielectric coating applied to selected ring surfaces. The ZKL coating is manufactured using a sophisticated coating and impregnation process developed in-house by ZKL, ensuring stable electrical properties even under the demanding operating conditions of railway vehicle traction drives.
Based on operational testing of its electrical insulation properties, this solution achieves or exceeds performance comparable to commonly used industrial standards, including high voltage resistance and electrical insulation. Its properties are maintained even under mechanical loads and varying humidity and temperature conditions. This reduces the risk of electrical erosion of the raceways and increases the reliability of traction motors under real operating conditions.
